HOWTO Use Bezier Curves & Sculptify [Basic]

This topic was meant to be a video-tutorial for the "Primstar Basics" back to late 2009 but due to Domino's health condition and my stressful life we obviously couldn't do it.

So... Back to the topic, took the time take some images of the basic process on how to use bezier curves and sculptify the way I do it which is probably the most handy and commonly used among Blender users nowadays.

Bezier Curves usage can vary from easy (like this one) to a pretty complex manipulation to generate animations.

Blender sculptie node setup

Here's a node setup for baking sculpties manually. You'll need to apply any subsurf and multires and then edit the uv map and move the top row and right hand side in by 1 pixel for an accurate bake.

Blocks.blend - example of disjointed sculptie

Here's a test file I put together for the new baker. It uses an 8 x 256 oblong map to give 16 separate blocks which should work on LOD2 and LOD3. Do an Image - LOD bake on the sculpt map to make studying how I did it easier.

Basically, I cleaned up and copied a 4 x faces, 3 y faces sphere mesh along the UV Map leaving a gap of two faces (for 2 LOD levels) between each. This let's you model without connecting lines as the baker will fill in the gaps. Just make sure the edge of each gap is drawn to a single point on the mesh.

Understanding the sculpt map format is one of the most important things a sculptie maker can know. This knowledge makes choosing the basic sculpt type easier and also allows many advanced techniques to be used in the modelling process. It will also help you to understand what the Primstar scripts are doing to make things quicker for you.

Baking sculptie maps

When you have finished editing the mesh, you can create (or update) the sculptie map by selecting Render - Bake Second Life Sculpties from the menus.

You can then set the baking options for the sculptie. Usually the default settings are fine.

Import a sculpt map

Simply select 'Second Life Sculptie' from the "File - Import" menu and choose the sculptie map to import (hint: click filename with middle mouse button to open quickly).

You will be given an options dialog that will let you select the sculptured prim type and the scale (these match the sizes in Second Life®).

Creating a sculptie in Blender

From the Blender menus select Add - Mesh - Sculpt Mesh.

This will show the Primstar Add Sculpt Mesh dialog where you can set exactly what type of sculptie you want to create.

Vote for VWR-9384

New scripts up with add mesh support for VWR-9384

Unfortunately the latest word from Qarl was that VWR-9384 would not make it into the next release. This could mean people start making sculpties with the wrong sizes and then "legacy" content would prevent VWR-9384 from ever being implemented. Please let your voice be heard on this important issue and vote now, as tomorrow may be too late!
