HOWTO Manually Install Primstar on Windows

Manny's picture

A few fellows asked me how to install Primstar on Windows, I successfully installed it on Windows XP/7 32bit using this method, [ THIS PART HAS BEEN RE-EDITED: thanks go to two argentinian folks who kindly helped me out testing this installation procedure on Windows 7 64bit: it works on Windows 7 64bit too] so took the time to take some screenshots to guide those willing to install Primstar manually.

A while back I made-up a HOWTO install.py - Primstar Automatic Installation on Windows that's another way to accomplish the task.

However I prefer the manual installation, before the data loss mentioned in that how-to used to have more than one Blender installed, basically a main Blender installation not related to Primstar with a bunch of different scripts from the Blender community and then I had a few Blenders holding different Primstar versions used for testing, so the manual installation is quite handy.

For this manual installation needed: [all 32bit versions (use 32bit versions too if you are installing on Windows 7 64bit)]

Python Windows x86 MSI Installer (2.6.5) more information here.

Blender 2.49b Zip Archive (15 MB) more information here.

Primstar 1.0.0 more information here.

7-Zip file archiver (4.65) more information here. (If you are on a 64bit Operating System feel free to install the x64 version)

Used Windows XP for this demostration.

FIRST you have to install Python, I don't cover the istallation it's absolutely straightforward, though.

From now on we'll surf Blender & Primstar Manual installation.

Please navigate the images below they hold the information to guide you through the process:

hey CreatinStylez

You're very welcome, but you are wrong! The knowledgeable 1 is Domino Marama, he knows a lot more than me, honestly. To make it even more clear, I have almost every single Blender related good book out there from modeling to rigging even game engine and endless hours of video-tutorials related to Blender (and different 3d packages) even like that he's always impressing me how much he knows.

Back to your question... Baking textures for SL sculpties isn't that hard at all, actually it's a really simple task, what's hard is to design textures, good ones... It takes a lot of knowledge like handling: materials; textures; maps; nodes; ambient occlusion; lamps; shades, all that comes to rendering. Gaining such knowledge takes more than a week, after you figure out all that information you have different texturing techniques like: texture painting (polypainting); projection painting, etc... Then you should be able to enhance them exporting/importing those textures to packages like GIMP; Photoshop; etc... As you notice it's a whole new world...

First try to absorve as much knowledge about how texturing using Blender works, there're many good tutorials on the web about it provided by Blender's community and companies dedicated to video-training.

Second here are a few links/sites that show/explain how to bake textures using Primstar:

1) BlenderSL by Keira Wells (I have seen some of the videos there, neat ones!)

2) Sculpt Blender by Murgy (I have read some of the articles, neat tricks he shares!)

3) Machinimatrix by Machinimatrix Team (I have seen some of the old videos, neat ones!) [They have packed a product known as Jass that holds Primstar, I haven't tried Jass since its early version 1 or 2 years ago, but I'm guessing the new video-tutorials should work for Primstar 1.0.0 since Jass contains Primstar plus some features they developed.]

That's a good start, those sites up there also cover modeling so you will be on your way for a while. And as mentioned earlier if you want to polish your texturing you will have to face the fact you have to handle a lot more than it's shown there, of course if you don't already!

Hope you work it out! Star

Hi. I'd like to tell you that

Hi.

I'd like to tell you that we have finalized our new sculptie tutorials featuring primstar-1.0.0 a few weeks ago. The newest tutorial is about texturing but you might be well adviced to watch all the 4 tutorials as they build upon each other. All in all they take about 60 minutes of your time and i was told that they are usefull especially for blender newbies Wink Here is the link: http://blog.machinimatrix.org/3d-creation/video-tutorials/

@Manny: Jass-2 now comes with 2 editions. the free edition contains an unmodified version of primstar-1.0.0 the PRO edition contains some interesting advantages on the baker tool allowing for true precision and optimized multipart sculptie bakes. However you do not need to use Jass at all as most users will be more than satisfied with the "original" primstar. In case of interest here is the link to the Jass-2 page: http://blog.machinimatrix.org/jass-2/

Cheers, Gaia

hey Jeff

Hi, Jeff;

Usually that happens when you do not define the default scripts directory correctly, which means the path you have defined is not where the scripts and primstar folder are located. Another chance would be you defined the path correctly but you have forgotten to save the changes.

Check pngs 16 - 22.

I installed Blender and Primstar 1.0.0 using this method on a Windows 7 32bit a while ago, in my case didn't need administrator permission and worked straightforward exactly the same as in the images above. Remember Python should be installed as well, Primstar needs it.

If the problem persists would be interesting to know what the error says, to get the console error message you have to nagivate through the Command Prompt to blender.exe file's location and execute it via command (to run Blender from the Command Prompt the command is: blender). After you type blender hit Enter and Blender will open you will notice the console will display the error this time.

Primstar Windows 7 64bit WORKS

As mentioned above in this post, I was sure this method worked for Windows XP and 7 32bit, because I tested myself.

Gladily yesterday walking around SL met a couple nice folks, we started to talk about 3d modeling/design ending up talking about Primstar, Blender, Python and of course a little about Primstar's developer: Domino Marama.

Point is both were using Windows 7 64bit and kindly accepted my advice to give it a try and help me to figure out if this Manual Installation posted above worked right on the 64bit version.

Results are, fellas, it works exactly the same for both 32bit and 64bit Operating System versions.

I'm quite happy there are folks willing to help a stranger, me in that case, to contribute to a small free software community like this one, without any other plan in mind besides to: help one another.

I would love to meet a lot more people like them much more often.
